The Princeton Review asked students at 169 law schools about academics, student body, and campus life at their school, as well as themselves and their career plans. The student surveys used for this edition were all completed online at survey.review.com and conducted during the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017 school years. Pepperdine Law is one of 169 outstanding law schools that The Princeton Review featured on its website as part of Best Law Schools 2018. For the 2018 ranking of law schools, The Princeton Review analyzed data from a survey of 19,900 students who attended schools and school administrators. The education services company includes Pepperdine in the 2018 publication of its annual article “The 169 Best Law Schools” online on www.princetonreview.com/best-law-schools. Suppose I look at the weighted averages of the colleges. You could indeed give me reliable information.
How a person has performed academically in the past can accurately predict how they will behave in the future. So I could follow a strategy where I first admit all people with GPA 4.0, and then I work backwards from 4.0 until the law school entrance class is occupied. Now, imagine that I am a member of the admissions committee at Pepperdine Law School. My job on the admissions committee is to accept only those candidates about whom I can make a reasonable prediction of satisfactory performance in law school. But how can I make such a prediction? What information about a candidate will tell me more reliably that he or she will succeed in law school? According to Robert Franek, editor-in-chief of the Princeton Review, “We recommend Pepperdine as one of the best institutions to earn a law degree. We selected the 169 schools in this cohort based on our high appreciation of their studies and our assessment of the institutional data we collect from schools. We also solicited and respected the opinions of 19,900 students who attend these schools and shared their experiences in their schools in our 80-question student survey for the book. “Keep in mind that a significant number of graduates of public colleges and universities are actually studying law. The fact is that students who want to go to law school should be careful, especially when it comes to the LSAT. Earning a high grade point average is not enough. As Northeastern Law School statistics show, even those with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and don`t do well at LSAT have only about a four percent chance of admission. A few years ago, a survey was sent to the deans of the law school (the “presidents” of the law schools).
One of the survey questions was which majors the deans recommended students prepare effectively for law school. The four majors most commonly recommended by the deans of the law school were (in alphabetical order) English (sometimes called literature), history, philosophy, and political science (sometimes called government). Therefore, I recommend that students who want to go to law school study in one of these fields. If it turns out that English is not the chosen major, it should seriously be considered a minor subject, as good writing is absolutely essential to success in law. Consider a few more statistics. The national average score on the LSAT is about 152. This is called the 50th percentile. In other words, half of all people who take the LSAT across the country score 152 or higher. The average score for CUNY students completing the LSAT is about 142. Now, with only 10 points below 152, 142 doesn`t seem to be a big difference from the national average. But the important comparison is between percentiles. An LSAT score of 142 is about the 20th percentile.
In other words, about 80% of all people who take the test across the country fare better than 142. Pepperdine has grown faster and faster than any private law school in America. No other place can match our distinctive Pepperdine community, which is characterized by excellence, Christian values, and rigorous legal education. Diverse in our backgrounds and beliefs, we are united in our commitment to encourage you to reach higher than you ever thought possible. “At Pepperdine Caruso Law, we don`t chase rankings,” says Dean Paul Caron. “On the contrary, every decision we make is guided by what is in the best interest of our students. In recent years, we have increased the success rate of our graduating class at the bar exam in California (from 65% in 2017 to 82% in 2019) and the other 49 states (from 82% in 2017 to 96% in 2019) and secured full-time employment (from 65% in 2016 to 84% in 2019). This dramatic increase in the return on investment of our students in their pepperdine legal education has led to our rise in the rankings. Pepperdine strives to be the country`s leading denominational law school, uniting academic excellence and Christian values in a unique, cohesive community that welcomes everyone. We inspire in our students an enduring passion for law through a transformative experience that leads them to impactful careers that will change the world. Therefore, the big problem for most students at public colleges and universities who want to go to law school is a good performance on the LSAT. How can students prepare for this? Why aren`t students at public colleges and universities as successful at entering law school as students nationally? Keep in mind that the national average includes students attending elite colleges and universities like Pepperdine and Pepperdine, where 80 or 90 percent or more of their students are admitted to law school.
So the national average is exactly that – an average. “As hopes for a return to campus operations grow after a very difficult year, the news of this ranking is a welcome addition,” said Paul Caron, Duane and Kelly Roberts Dean of Caruso Law. “We are thrilled to be ranked among the top 50 law schools in the country, a result that reflects the outstanding work of our students, faculty and staff.” The entertainment, media and sports (EMS) industry has become an area of enormous scale and scope. Sectors continue to grow with opportunities in an ever-changing global landscape interconnected to today`s digital and information age. U.S. News & World Report ranked 194 law schools in the United States based on data collected in the fall of 2019 and early 2020. Peer and legal professional rating scores are based on data collected from voters who are asked to rate legal programs on a scale of 1 to 5. Selectivity criteria include the median cumulative grade point average of the bachelor`s degree, the acceptance rate, the bar success rate, and the placement of law graduates. Faculty resources include per-student expenditures, student-faculty ratios, and library resources.
The RANKINGS OF THE LA Area Law School represent the rank of Pepperdine Caruso Law compared to other L.A. areas of law schools: UCLA, USC, Loyola, Southwestern. Pepperdine University School of Law is located in Malibu, California, just a mustache from the Pacific Ocean and offers stunning views of one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The Faculty of Law hosts legal institutes around the world on human rights, religious freedom and global development, involving students and lecturers. I give that hypothetically as an example of what happens in law schools in general. What I`m going to say here about Pepperdine could be said about any law school in the country.
But there is a problem with this strategy. The 7,000 applicants have attended more than 250 different colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. How do I know that a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 in one college is the same level of academic achievement as a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 in another college? One college may have very high academic standards, while another might not. Thus, an “A” in one school is not the same as an “A” in another school. In addition, a student with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 might have studied basket weaving, while another 4.0 student from the same college may have studied in a much more challenging field. Therefore, two GPA 4.0 students in the same school may not represent comparable academic results. So even with GPA, I can`t be 100% sure I`ll choose the next Jura course. The USNWR 2023 Best Law School includes 192 law schools fully accredited by the American Bar Association. Ranking criteria include a weighted average of 14 metrics, including student selectivity, cash flow, and work placement; quality assessments by academic colleagues, lawyers and judges; and resources dedicated to the school`s academic program.
